VMware ESXi 6.5 Configuration

This is PART 2 of the esxi 6.5 installation and configuration. After a successful install of it, we must configure our host by using it DCUI (Direct Console User Interface).  The default server configuration is to use DHCP, if you do not have a DHCP server issuing IP Addresses on your network you will need to assign an IP Address. We recommend you use a static IP Address for your ESXi Host Server.

Press F2 to Customize System, you will be prompted to enter the root username and password.

We navigate through the console using the down arrow key and enter to select the option.  Select “Configure Management Network” to change Network Parameters.

Select “Network Adapters” menu to check the interface card that this host knows and use. Using the space tab you can check/uncheck one interface card as you wish.

After that, we select “IPv4 Configuration” for IP and subnet configuration. First check ‘Set static IPv4 address and network configuration’ by pressing space tab. Hit Enter to confirm and save the configuration.

In “IPv6 Configuration” menu, select ‘Disable IPv6’ and after you save all the configuration, it will require a restart of the host.

Then use the down arrow key again to move to the next menu: “DNS Configuration“.

Quick note: You should create your forward and reverse DNS records on your DNS server before configuring the DNS here.

Hit Enter once more. We’re almost done. The last menu “Custom DNS Suffixes”, we can enter any suffixes required or used for your DNS.

Press Enter. You’ll get a prompt to reboot, which will validate the configuration. Note that there is only single reboot necessary! And this is only because we disabled the IPv6 configuration. Press and wait a few minutes till the host is restarted.

That’s all about this post. You have successfully installed and configured VMware vSphere Hypervisor 6.5.

Next post, we will see different methods to connect to our host, you can find here: Connecting to VMware ESXi 6.5

Thank you!
